  3. 1961–63Diplomatic relations are severed and the border closes for nearly two years.
  4. 1979–89Soviet forces occupy Afghanistan; Pakistan hosts the mujahideen and millions of refugees.
  5. 1996Pakistan becomes one of three states to recognise the first Taliban government.
  6. 2001A US-led invasion removes the Taliban; much of its leadership relocates into Pakistan.
  7. 2007The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan is founded as an umbrella of Pakistani militant factions.
  8. 2017Pakistan begins fencing the 2,640-kilometre Durand Line over Afghan objections.
  9. August 2021The Taliban retake Kabul as US and NATO forces withdraw.
  10. October 2023Pakistan begins mass expulsions of Afghan nationals under a repatriation plan.
